The man who killed 13-year-old Sinzae Reed last year is behind bars, but no on murder charges.

Franklin County Jail records show 37-year-old Krieg Butler was booked into the jail on Sunday night. That's after he was indicted on weapons and tampering charges last week.

A grand jury declined to bring murder charges for the October shooting that Butler claims was self-defense.

Butler, 36, was indicted Friday by a Franklin County grand jury on felony charges of improperly handing a firearm in a motor vehicle and tampering with evidence. Neither of the felonies allege responsibility for Reed's death.

Butler was initially charged with murder following the Oct. 12, 2022, shooting outside of the Wedgewood Drive apartments where Reed and Butler both lived. The charges were quickly dropped as prosecutors reviewed the case. Butler claimed the shooting was in self-defense.

Few details have been released on the case.

WOSU is seeking more records connected to the case, but record requests with the Columbus police for camera footage and the Franklin County prosecutor's office have yet to be fulfilled.

It is unclear what other charges, if any, the Franklin County prosecutor's office presented to the grand jury for consideration.

Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack's office has not yet responded to an email asking what charges the grand jury considered and whether or not other charges are still being considered.

Reed's family has called for Butler to be arrested and charged with murder. His mother Megan Reed in January rejected claims that Butler could have shot her son in self-defense. At the time of the interview with WOSU, she also criticized the prosecutor's office for their handling of the case and complained about their lack of communication with her.

WOSU left messages Friday with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Columbus and the city's probation department to see if Butler will face consequences for alleged gun possession while on probation for domestic violence.

Butler has yet to enter a plea to the weapons charges. Court records do not list the name of his attorney. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
