Republican J.D. Vance defeated Democrat Tim Ryan to win Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat that is being vacated by Republican Rob Portman, according to the Associated Press.
The race was one of the most important in the country as both political parties battled for control of the Senate in the second half of President Joe Biden’s term.
Ryan called Vance after 11 p.m. to concede the race, according to Ohio Public Radio's Andy Chow.
Vance, a veteran, venture capitalist and author of the best-selling memoir Hillbilly Elegy, was picked by former President Donald Trump during the Republican primary in the spring. He was never held political office before. Trump appeared with Vance at a Monday night rally at the Dayton airport.

Ryan, who has served the Youngstown-area in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2013, campaigned as a Trump Democrat in an attempt to distance himself from Biden and appeal to moderate voters.
