COTA drops plans for sales tax share increase

COTA's proposed .5% sales tax increase will not be on the ballot this November.

The Central Ohio Transit Authority previously proposed the tax increase to help pay for LinkUS, a program to increase access to rapid transit across Columbus.

In a statement, COTA spokesman Jeff Pullin said, "As we look at the economic climate and the reality of rising prices for gas, food, and more, we understand the financial strain these factors are putting on our community. Knowing this, we recognize now is not the right time to move forward with the public financing request for LinkUS."

The effort to increase access to rapid transit across Columbus is still on the table as COTA applied for $300 million in grants for the LinkUS project. COTA plans to release the LinkUs Community Action Plan in the coming days.

COTA is working with MORPC, the City of Columbus, and Franklin County on the project.
