Many COTA bus riders will ride for less money later this fall as the transit company launches a new fare management system.
The system will cap fares at $4.50 a day or $62 a month, the price of a monthly pass.
A flat rate of $2 will be the standard price, eliminating the $0.75 upcharge on rush-hour lines.
It also allows for 2-hour use of a fare in place of the one-way restriction.
COTA public and media relations manager Jeff Pullin said the new digital payment system is designed to make public transit more equitable and save riders money.
“For some of our customers, they're going to end up saving hundreds of dollars a year, because if they're paying well over $100 to ride 20 plus times a month at $8 a day, that really adds up over time,” said Pullin.
Riders will be able to load funds onto the Transit app or a smart card at about 350 retail locations throughout central Ohio.
