Columbus Police say a 12-year-old girl in Reynoldsburg died when she was shot after a gun discharged in a neighbor's apartment.

Officers arrived at an apartment on Brooke Boulevard on Wednesday night and found Lidia Ghide, 12, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where she died.

Eric Carpenter, 42, was handling a rifle in a neighboring apartment when it fired, police said.

"The discharged round exited Mr. Carpenter's apartment ans truck Lidia, who was inside an adjacent apartment, fatally wounding her," police said in a press release.

Carpenter was charged with reckless homicide. It is not known whether he has retained a lawyer.

Columbus Police say this is the 151st homicide in 2020, which is Columbus' deadliest year on record.
