Former Ohio State president Michael V. Drake will be heading back to California as the next president of the University of California system.
Drake will replace Janet Napolitano and become the first Black president in its 152-year history. He was unanimously approved Tuesday by the Board of Regents.
Drake, who served six years at the helm of Ohio State, spent his entire academic career within the University of California system prior to coming to Columbus. He served as the chancellor of the University of California, Irvine from 2005-2014.
Drake's replacement, Kristina Johnson, formerly of the State University of New York system, begins September 1.
