It was the largest graduating class ever at Ohio State University, and also the first to have a completely virtual ceremony.
Ohio State awarded 12,967 degrees and certificates on Sunday as Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a streamed keynote address. The in-person ceremony was canceled last month due to the spread of coronavirus.
Ohio State University president Dr. Michael Drake and a handful of other university leaders conducted the ceremony from an empty Ohio Stadium, the venue for the annual spring graduation. Graduates and their families watched streaming video of the ceremony.
Cook called for the graduates to wear this challenging time as a badge of honor as they move on to their next endeavors.
"It can be difficult to see the whole picture when you’re still inside the frame, but I hope you wear these uncommon circumstances as a badge of honor," Cook said.
Some graduates spent much of the weekend taking pictures at iconic campus spots including Mirror Lake and outside Ohio Stadium.
Ohio State officials have yet to outline what the school will do in the fall. Drake said a decision to reopen the campus for the fall semester in August will come by June.
The university has canceled all campus events until July 6.
