Columbus police say a June shooting that killed one teen and injured another was not the result of a home invasion as originally reported, but was caused by teens playing with a gun.

Immediately after the shooting, police said witnesses reported a man wearing all black entering a home near Merion Village and opening fire.

"Initial witness accounts point to a single, unknown suspect, wearing all black who entered the residence and opened fire on a gathering of family and friends at the residence, striking the two victims," a police release said.

Police now say an investigation shows the shooting that killed Shayma Schultz, 15, was an accident due to teens playing with a loaded gun that was illegally obtained and brought to the residence on Welch Avenue that night.

Two teens are charged with counts including reckless homicide and grand theft of a firearm.
