A small plane crashed near U.S. Route 42 near Plain City.

Authorities say one person died when a small plane crashed into a farm field in rural Union County.

Chief Deputy Tom Morgan of the sheriff's office said that the plane skidded across U.S. Route 42 and hit a utility pole and lines near Harriott Road. The crash caused a power outage in the village of Plain City.

“Deputies and units from the Jerome Township Fire Department responded to the scene,” Morgan said.  “A deputy was on the scene within one minute and found an approximately 400 yard debris field.”

Morgan said one person died, and he did not know how many people were aboard.

Morgan said authorities had not determined the cause of the crash, but he said it was snowing and overcast at the time of the crash.

The plane was preliminarily identified as a Cessa 421 twin engine. Morgan said it was "totally destroyed."

The cause of the crash is unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified.
