Steve Stephens, the man sought in the killing of an elderly man in Cleveland, committed suicide after a chase by Pennsylvania State Police in Erie.
State police say Steve Stephens was spotted Tuesday morning by police at a McDonald's in Erie County, in the state's northwest corner. They received his location as a tip.
Authorities say police tried to pull Stephens over and, after a brief pursuit, he shot and killed himself.
Police say they still aren't sure what drove Stephens to commit the acts.
"There are a lot of things about this we don't know," said Cleveland Police chief Calvin Williams in a Tuesday afternoon press conference.
Law enforcement officials said their goal was to bring Stephens in safely, but that Stephens chose to not do so.
"This started with one tragedy, and ended with another person taking their own life," Williams said. "A loss of life is a loss of life."
Williams said police had searched the Erie area before without success, and were planning to do a more thorough search of the area today.
Stephens, who was wanted on an aggravated murder charge, had evaded Cleveland Police and the FBI since Sunday, when he posted a video on Facebook of himself shooting and killing 74-year-old Robert Godwin Sr. Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson announced a $50,000 reward for Stephens' arrest.
