The city of Columbus formally accepted its Smart City grant from Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today.

The city was informed earlier this week that it had beat out six other cities to win the 50-million dollar transportation grant from the federal government and Vulcan, Inc.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther says the city's formula for winning could be replicated in other cities.

“Winning the DOT and Vulcan grants positions us to leap ahead of the existing barriers of mobility with technology solutions that create ladders of opportunity for all of our residents and establish best practices for mid-sized cities all across the world,” Ginther said.

The city's winning plan features driverless cars to and from Easton and smart traffic lights among other things.
