Republicans in the Ohio House have made good on promises to introduce a bill that, if approved, would require fetal remains from abortions must be buried, cremated or subject to an authorized incineration method. It follows a state investigation into Planned Parenthood.
Republican state representatives previously announced the measure formally introduced Wednesday.
The legislation leaves details of fetal disposal procedures to the state's health director. It follows a separate measure under which pregnant women getting abortions would be asked to decide in writing whether their fetal remains should be buried or cremated.
The second bill also allows "an approved hospital type of incineration" and removes language from Ohio law that requires "humane disposition" of fetal remains.
A recent attorney general's report criticized Planned Parenthood for disposing of fetal remains in landfills. The group says it follows Ohio law, calling the report "inflammatory."
Lawmakers are on break until the new year.
