A Columbus man suffering from a long-term mental illness was sentenced to serve four years in prison for threatening to kill President Barack Obama in 2013.
A federal court judge recommended placing 41-year-old Michael Clark Jr. in a federal prison with a mental-health program at sentencing Wednesday.
Prosecutors say Clark mailed a letter to President Obama on Feb. 4, 2013 outlining his plans to take a rifle on a bus to Washington to assassinate the president.
Officials say Clark identified himself as a white supremacist and included racial slurs in the letter.
Secret Service agents found Clark at a mental-health treatment center in Columbus' Hilltop neighborhood. He had sent the letter from Franklin County jail.
Officials say Clark also threatened President Bill Clinton in 1998.
