High Court Rejects GOP Bid in Ohio Voting Dispute

Ohio's elections chief has the U.S. Supreme Court on her side in a battle over voter registrations.

The high court Friday overruled an order that Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner do more to help counties verify voter eligibility.

Brunner had faced a deadline today to set up a system for providing names of new voters whose registrations don't gibe with other government data.

Ohio Republicans contended that alerting counties to discrepancies would help prevent fraud. Democrat Brunner said the GOP wanted to disenfranchise some voters.

The Supreme Court says the Republicans didn't have standing to bring their lawsuit. Ohio GOP Chairman Bob Bennett says if there are any doubts about Ohio's election results, it'll be Brunner's fault. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
