The composer/performer used to be a common thing. Think Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. It isn't as common as it once was, but ProMusica likes to find and feature those musicians in their concerts.
You can hear a fine example of that on Columbus in Concert at 1:00pm Sunday, as ProMusica is joined by Welch pianist/composer Huw Watkins. Watkins' Little Symphony opens the program. During Coda, ProMusica's post-concert conversation, Huw, David Danzmayr, and I discussed the Little Symphony.
Former Columbus mayor Greg Lashutka posed a question to both Huw and David about the musician's role in a tension-filled world.
Also on the program, Watkins performed the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich, followed by Schubert's Symphony No. 4.
You can hear the complete performance Sunday at 1:00 pm on Classical 101.
