Russian guitarist Dimitri Illarionov has won awards at more than 20 international guitar competitions, including the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Competition and the Tarrega Competition in Spain. The Columbus Guitar Society is bringing Illarianov to Bexley for their concert series this coming February with cellist Boris Andrianov.
You don't have to wait that long, though, to hear Dimitri Illarionov. He'll be featured on the next Fretworks broadcast performing the Cavatina of Alexander Tansman in his 2003 recording from Naxos.
Australian-born guitarist John Williams has long been one of the most widely recognized classical guitarists in the world, and I'll have his recording of his own transcription of the Oboe Concerto in C-Minor by Alessandro Marcello with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. This mid-1980's release, originally on CBS Masterworks (now Sony), also contains Williams' transcriptions of concertos by J.S. Bach and Handel.
The Castellani-Andriaccio Duo will play the Fantasia de la Danza for two guitars by Argentinian composer Jorge Morel, and a German duo consisting of mandolin player Daniel Ahlert and guitarist Birgit Schwab has the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy by Thomas Schmidt-Kowalski.
English guitarist Graham Anthony Divine will conclude the hour with Eight Contradances of 19th century Cuban composer Manuel Saumell arranged by Leo Brouwer.
