The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will perform Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 on the next Fretworks

In the liner notes to the 1996 Delos recording, Scott Tennant points out that the range of the lower pitched stringed instruments in the original version (two violas, two viola da gamba, cello, and continuo) match that of the guitar extremely well.

Peruvian guitarist, Jesus Castro Balbi will play 4 Venezuelan Waltzes of Antonio Lauro, considered the most outstanding of Venezuelan composers in  music that blends South American and European influences. Our performance comes from a 1991 Etcetera Recording.

We'll hear the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields with guitarist Pepe Romero for an early 19th century gem from the Italian-born Ferdinando Carulli, the Guitar Concerto in E-Minor. Carulli was one of a group of virtuoso guitarist-composers popular in Paris in the early 19th century. Others in the group included Mauro Giuliani, Francesco Molino and Spanish-born Fernando Sor.

A new disc titled Tempo Do Brasil from Marc Regnier features all Brazilian composers.  We'll hear one of the best-known, Heitor Villa-Lobos in an arrangement of the Aria from Bachianas brasileiras No. 5 for Cello and guitar with Natalia Khoma accompanying Regnier.

Russian guitarist Vladimir Gorbach, who won the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition in 2011, will play a sonata by Domenico Scarlatti. Naxos Records has long been releasing fine guitar recital recordings from both relatively new artists and long-established favorites.

Fretworks airs Saturday and Wednesday evening at 7 on Classical 101.
