Two British organizations are working to bring an audience once marginalized from musical experiences straight into the heart of classical music. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the British organization Music and the Deaf have joined forces to create a special concert series designed to give adults and children with hearing loss a chance to experience music, according to Gramophone. The five performances will take place in Cardiff later this month and will allow audience members to sit within the orchestra and to touch the instruments as they're being played. Students from a Welsh school specializing in teaching students with learning disabilities will participate in workshops with orchestra members and a music workshop leader and will have a chance to perform a musical work specially devised for them. One of the concerts will also feature the Deaf Choir from Wales' Llantarnam High School. BBC National Orchestra of Wales education and community outreach manager Suzanne Hay told Gramophone that the series aims to raise awareness of hearing impairment among the general public.
