Concert Raises Nearly $70,000 For Oregon District Tragedy Fund

Jerry Kenney

The Dayton Foundation reports the Gem City Shine benefit concert put together by comedian Dave Chappelle and several local organizations brought in more than $68,000 for the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund.

The fund now has more than $2.5 million to distribute to people severely injured, and to the families of those killed in a mass shooting on August 4.

“We were really thankful for the community groups that got together to plan that event," says Carrie Dalrymple, the community relations program officer with the Dayton Foundation. "We had volunteers out at tables collecting donations and it was amazing to see the generosity of people just just giving for the victims and even the healing and getting back into the Oregon District. It was just really neat to be a part of that.”

Thousands of people came to the Oregon District for the August 25 Gem City Shine concert. Event organizers included The Oregon District Business Association, Downtown Dayton Partnership, Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce and others.

The Partnership says they are still taking orders for t-shirts commemorating the concert until Thursday, September 5, 2019. All proceeds from the sale of that shirt will go to the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund.

The Dayton Foundation says the fund will be open for another 3 to 6 months. Recently a committee was formed to oversee the eventual distribution of the proceeds.
