Two of the world’s finest lutenists stopped by the Classical 101 studio recently for a jam session. You might say there were strings attached.
Paul O’Dette and Ronn McFarlane were in Columbus last week to perform a concert of lute duets on the Early Music in Columbus series.
The visit marked a homecoming for O’Dette, who was raised in Columbus, and whose mother, Clara O’Dette, had a long association with WOSU.
O’Dette and McFarlane talked about the tradition of lute playing in Elizabethan England, where whole passels of lutenists sometimes played together at the court of Queen Elizabeth I.
The musicians also gave us command performances of a bunch English lute duets.
That’s a lotta lute!
