The New World Singers, a Columbus Children's Choir ensemble, join pianist Gilbert De Greeve in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 16 in Capital University's Mees Auditorium.
The concert commemorates composer and music educator Zoltan Kodaly, 50 years after his death, and serves as a farewell to the New World Singers. The group of 55 teenage vocalists leaves for an 11-day concert tour in Austria and Hungary the following morning.
Featuring the more advanced singers of the Columbus Children's Choir, the New World Singers are used to taking their act on the road. In 2011, they sang a concert at the White House. They've also performed in Germany, Russia, Italy, France, Canada, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Spain.
For this summer's tour, they'll collaborate with the Vienna Boys' Choir in concert at Lake Worthersee, Austria. Then in Kecskemet, Hungary, the New World Singers will serve as the demonstration choir for the International Kodaly Seminar.
"Not only is it a prestigious invitation, it’s a life-changing experience for our singers," said artistic director Jeanne Wohlgamuth in a press release.
There's a suggested donation of $10 for entry to this Sunday's concert, and contributions will go toward the Gregory von Stein and Sandra L. Mathias Scholarship Fund for graduate students enrolled in Capital University's Kodaly Institute. Mathias founded the Columbus Children's Choir (then known as the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Children's Chorus), and served as artistic director for 25 years.
