The Catholic Diocese of Columbus in May moved forward with its plan to close 15 churches and consolidate others in a 23-county region.
The decision will eliminate important community resources and gathering places, especially for poor, rural and marginalized populations. Columbus is not unique and the Catholic Church is not alone.
The number of American adults identifying as non-religious has quadrupled in the past 30 years.
