When NPR political correspondent Asma Khalid covered the 2016 presidential campaign, the midwestern muslim woman encountered a wide range of responses from people she met on the campaign trail.

Many were curious about her hijab or headscarf, many were kind. Many were angry.

Khalid shares her experiences with that and with the emergence of women candidates since the 2016 presidential election. A record number are seeking election to Congress. Khalid has been covering those stories.
