Teaching Slavery in America

The Southern Poverty Law Center has published a new study that shows students don’t learn enough about the history of slavery in America. Of the thousand high school seniors surveyed, fewer than one in ten could identify slavery as the root cause of the South's secession and the Civil War.
 
Without understanding that history, students struggle to link the past to present day racial conflict.
