Pregnancy can comes with its risks and complications, but the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. is higher than any other developed country. According to ProPublica and NPR, 60 percent of these deaths could have been prevented.
Research points to several causes for why the pregnancy-related fatalities are rising. One issue lies in the healthcare system where there is more focus on babies and less focus on their mothers.
