Columbus City Council is now accepting applications to fill outgoing member Shayla Favor's District 7 seat through an appointment process.

Favor will become the next Franklin County Prosecutor after defeating Republican John Rutan in the Nov. 5 general election. Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin outlined the process to fill Favor's seat after she leaves office in a memo to fellow councilmembers.

Any applicants would be required to live within Columbus City Council District 7. This district covers downtown Columbus, Franklinton, Italian Village, Victorian Village, Harrison West, Fifth by Northwest, Olde Town East, Near East and the University District.

The city will begin accepting applications Thursday and the application form will be open until 12 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9 on the city's website. On Dec. 12, each member of city council will choose up to three applicants each, who will receive further consideration.

A list of finalists is expected to be released on Dec. 13 to the public and a final vote will take place early next year.

Whoever is chosen will fill the position until the end of 2025, when Favor's current term expires.
