Issues involving jobs and unemployment are an ongoing public concern across Central Ohio. WOSU Public Media is advancing the conversation about work, especially the need for high-skilled workers in thousands of open positions in our community.

As part of the national initiative, American Graduate: Getting to Work, WOSU is engaging the public on air, online and in the community on a key message — the imperative to prepare students with the skill sets and training needed to be part of the new workforce, especially for high-demand fields.

WOSU’s Rivet podcast explores new career paths in Central Ohio. Listen where ever you get your podcasts.

The podcast series, Rivet is a big push towards that end. It invites young adults to “step off the conventional career path and follow the next generation of workers as they find well-paying jobs they enjoy.”

It was launched in November 2018 with six compelling stories. Look for a second series in a few months.

On WOSU TV getting-to-work experiences are revealed in short videos such as one of teens discussing lessons from their first jobs and another of a young man who found a pre-apprenticeship program as the way out of life on the streets.

WOSU is one of 19 stations to receive a two-year grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) for American Graduate: Getting to Work. We are working with public television stations in Cleveland and Cincinnati on a state model to address issues of education and career readiness that may be used across the country.

Last October, all three stations hosted Talking Jobs With Ohio’s Next Governor, digital public forum with the candidates for Ohio governor. Thousands of students across the state were connected to the event and asked questions of the candidates.
