Columbus City Schools Board Member Michael Cole was chosen as the new president of the board.

The Columbus Board of Education changed its leadership after President Christina Vera decided to step down as president.

The board elected Michael Cole as the new president and Jennifer Adair as the vice president on Tuesday night. Vera had been president for a little over a year, serving with board member Tina Pierce as her vice president. Board member Ramona Reyes was chosen as the board's president pro tem.

Vera said she would not seek re-election as board president. She said it was a personal decision, but she doesn't think this will take away from the work of the board.

"Together we have a lot of work to do, and I look forward to serving alongside of each of you," Vera said to her colleagues.

Cole called the vote an "incredible occasion" after he and Adair were sworn in.

"I believe with all of my heart that we have the right people at the table, irrespective of our missteps, mistakes, failures, whatever we want to call them. I think they are opportunities we can take to learn, to fail forward and grow as a result of it," Cole said.

Cole was nominated by Vera. Cole, Vera, Reyes, and board members Tina Pierce and Brandon Simmons voted for Cole.

Board member Sarah Ingles nominated Jennifer Adair for president. Only Ingles and Adair herself voted for Adair.
