A Spirit Airlines flight was evacuated due to a mechanical issue at John Glenn Columbus International Airport Friday.

The airline said in a statement, "Spirit Airlines flight 445 from Columbus (CMH) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) reported a mechanical issue on the taxiway at CMH shortly after pushing back from the gate."

The airline said out of an abundance of caution, guests safely deplaned and were taken by bus to the terminal.

"Safety is our top priority, and the aircraft will be thoroughly evaluated by our maintenance team. We are working on alternate travel arrangements to get our guests to their final destinations," the statement said.

The Columbus Regional Airport Authority confirmed the evacuation in a statement, but deferred to the airline for details.

Airport spokeswoman Breann Gonzalez Almos said the pilot called air traffic control about the problem, and the airport’s aircraft rescue and firefighting team responded and evacuated the plane.

A Spirit Airlines spokesman said there is no evidence of any fire.

This is a developing story.
