Fleischer's Auctions of Columbus offered the sword at $40,000 to $60,000. It sold for more than $150,000, auction president Adam Fleischer said.
The collection of Sherman's personal effects sold at the auction also included a family bible, a personal copy of Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs, a book of photos of his "March to the Sea" and other items.
Fleischer said he expected the collection to sell for $100,000 to $200,000. The items sold for more than $600,000.
