Columbus police gave an update Monday after a weekend of violence that included two shootings within blocks of each other in the Short North, and one of them involved officers.
Police were already responding to a shooting in the 600 block of North High Street when shots rang out in the 800 block of the street around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
Columbus Division of Police Chief Elaine Bryant said officers who had been with city food truck license inspectors returned fire in that incident, injuring at least one person.
"This scene was extremely chaotic with multiple volleys of gunfire before the officers even fired their weapons,” Bryant said.
Police body-camera footage shows officers running toward the gunfire while firing and yelling at a suspect. One officer approached an injured man lying on the sidewalk and kicks a gun away from his hand before calling for EMS aid. Another officer approached a distressed woman who appeared to have been shot in the leg and attempted to aid her.
In all, a total of 10 people were shot in the chaotic North High Street incidents.
Bryant said it has been difficult to determine which victims came from which scene because many walked into area hospitals and were not forthcoming with information.
Everyone who was hurt is expected to recover.
Police arrested 20-year-old Jaylen Bradley. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but is now described as stable.
Police recovered 11 firearms in the North High Street incidents.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the officer-involved shooting.
Four people died and several others were injured in three additional incidents. Two were domestic violence incidents, making 12 domestic violence homicides so far this year in Columbus.
Around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, 28-year-old Taylin Rowland was shot to death by 29-year-old Keith Pleasant in the 1400 block of Clair Avenue. Police said Pleasant later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two were believed to be in a relationship, Bryant said.
Three other people at the scene were shot. Two have been treated and released and one remains in the hospital, but is expected to survive.
Around 4:40 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 500 block of East Whittier Street and found 36-year-old David Davis shot. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital. While that incident is still under investigation, Bryant said police believe the shooting started with an argument with a person Davis knew.
Police say just after 9 p.m. on Sunday, Rhonda Jones was fatally stabbed by her brother, Michael Wright, in the 1900 block of Vaughn Street. Wright was charged with murder after Jones was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Mayor Andrew Ginther called on community members, faith leaders, prosecutors, judges and legislators at all levels to fight the growing gun crisis.
“We all need to do better. We’re better than this. Our community is better than this,” Ginther said.
Bryant called the high number of shootings “extraordinary circumstances.”
