Three former fraternity members charged in the death of a Delaware County native at Bowling Green State University have been sentenced to jail time.
Jarrett Prizel, Ben Boyers and Niall Sweeney received jail sentences between two and four week.
They were charged in last March's death of 20-year-old Stone Foltz, a Buckeye Valley High School graduate.
Authorities said he died after drinking an entire bottle of liquor at a Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity initiation event. Fraternity members took him to his apartment afterward where a roommate later found Foltz unconscious. He died three days after he was put on life support.
Last month, two fraternity members were acquitted of involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide.
Ohio passed a new law in July 2021 that stiffens penalties for people convicted of hazing at the state’s college campuses.
The new law was passed after the death of Foltz and Dublin-native Collin Wiant. Wiant died after ingesting nitrous oxide during a hazing incident at a now-defunct Ohio University fraternity in November 2018.
The Inter-University Council, which represents Ohio’s public universities, has what it calls a zero-tolerance approach to hazing. It includes, among other things, automatic dismissal of students who are guilty of hazing.
