COTA looks to double its share of sales taxes to raise billions for a rapid transit system

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) wants to put a sales tax increase before voters, possibly as early as November. COTA said the money raised would go toward a $6 billion rapid transit system.

The increase would double the sales tax from half a cent to one penny.

COTA officials say federal grant opportunities in the next 5 years will require a local match, and that the new funding would enable them to seek that funding.

Voters in Franklin County and parts of Delaware, Fairfield, Licking and Union counties would decide.

In June 2020, COTA, the City of Columbus, MORPC and Franklin County Board of Commissioners launched LinkUS to create high capacity rapid transit and mobility options with bike trails, and sidewalks for a growing population.

The COTA board will have to approve any ballot requests.
