Activists are calling for action after a downtown Columbus shooting left one teen dead and five others injured.
Columbus Police say Olivia Kurtz, 16, was killed and five other teenagers were wounded in a shooting in Bicentennial Park. Police say a private event promoted on social media was being held in the park when the gunfire began shortly before midnight Saturday.
Melissa Thomas-St. Clair leads the group Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children. She says the city needs to enforce its curfew for teenagers.
“My call to action, as the founder of Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children, is strict enforcement of a city curfew," St. Clair said to WCMH.
There's already a citywide curfew for people under the age of 18, but police say it's enforced as a civil matter. Columbus has seen a spike in youth violence over the past year.
Police say Kurtz died shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday. A 16-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, two 19-year-old women and a 19-year-old man were also shot. Police said all are expected to recover.
Two other victims sustained minor injuries as they fled. No arrests were immediately announced.
