Hearings are underway to consider Amy Coney Barrett as the next associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Republican leaders in Ohio are urging the U.S. Senate to confirm Barrett despite pushback from Democrats.
In the past 20 years, six justices have been appointed to the Supreme Court. The average time between nomination to confirmation is 75 days.
But Republican Ohio Senate President Larry Obhof points out quicker confirmations have happened, such as the 40 days to confirm Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1993, and the 33-day confirmation of Sandra Day O'Connor in 1981.
Obhof says Barrett's recent confirmation to an appeals court should speed up the process.
"Most of the Senate has already had the opportunity to evaluate her to look into her background to read her writings," Obhof says
Democrats have argued the Senate should wait until after the presidential election to confirm a new justice.
