The number of abortions in Ohio continue to decline. According to the latest Ohio Abortion Report, 323 fewer abortions were reported last year than in 2018, a 2% drop.
In 2019, there were 20,102 abortions performed in Ohio. Of those, 87.5% were done at 12 weeks gestation or less, while about 0.05% of abortions were conducted after 20 weeks.
Women between the ages of 25-55 accounted for nearly 61.8% of abortions in Ohio, while 2.7% of the procedures were conducted on girls 17 and younger.
African American women were disproportionately represented among abortion patients, accounting for 46% of procedures last year, while white women accounted for another 46%.
Cuyahoga County led the state in inducted abortions, with 34.9% of procedures, while Franklin and Hamilton County followed behind with 19.6% and 16.4%, respectively.
There were 31 total complications reported last year, but none of them resulted in death.
Researchers say the abortion rate has declined nationwide, crediting a drop in unwanted pregnancies and greater access to birth control. However, a recent Ohio State study found that state abortion restrictions have disproportionately impacted rural counties, which have seen abortion rates drop faster than the rest of the state.
