A teacher from Westerville has completed his time in quarantine after returning from China.
John McGory was teaching English in Wuhan when the COVID-19 coronavirus broke out in the city. He shared his experience at a San Diego military base on WOSU's All Sides with Ann Fisher.
“Everyone coming back from Wuhan was required to go into quarantine, so that was the reason why we were there, and while we were there, there were seven or eight that developed symptoms and it turned out that two or three actually had the virus," McGory said.
Although McGory himself never came down with an infection, he noted one person who was taken away for testing initially showed no sign of the disease, but later tested positive.
“That upset a lot of the people in quarantine at the time because we were questioning what the CDC was doing,” McGory said.
McGory keeps in touch with friends in China, and he says they paint a grim picture of the country’s response to the virus.
“Some people were basically locked in their own apartments, they would not leave. I talked to friends that for three or four weeks hadn’t been outside, so it’s sort of like a self-quarantine,” McGory described.
McGory has been staying with family in Southern California since leaving the base, and plans to come back to Columbus in about a week.
