A New Albany-area man has pleaded guilty to murdering his father, who was a convicted pill mill doctor awaiting a five-year prison term at the time of his death.
On June 22, 2017, Jonah Lake, who was 19 at the time, called 9-1-1 to say he thought someone had shot his father Kevin Lake. The elder Lake had recently pleaded guilty to drug, fraud and tax charges, and told police threats had been made against his family after he agreed to testify against others in the case.
“He tried to tell police, but they f**king wouldn’t listen,” Jonah Lake told a 911 dispatcher.
Seventeen months later, in November 2018, Jonah Lake was indicted on charges of aggravated murder, murder, and tampering with evidence. Prosecutors say evidence showed he staged the home invasion and shot his father six times inside their Plain Township mansion.
In the months before he was killed, the elder Lake agreed to forfeit $30 million from his personal accounts.
Jonah Lake faces 15 years to life in prison.
