Monday is the deadline for Americans to file their personal income taxes.
State tax commissioner Jeff McClain says 4.5 million of the state’s 5.5 million filers had already submitted forms by the beginning of this month—but his office still has plenty of work left.
“You know, when we get near the end, those are a lot of the paper returns, those are the ones that the people are going to owe money,” McClain says. “So we do have we still have a lot of work to do before through next week and beyond because we’ll working some of these afterwards when they get in after they’ve been postmarked on the fifteenth.”
McClain says while paper returns need to be postmarked by April 15, online filers can complete their return up until midnight.
For those who aren’t going to make it on time, there are extensions available. But McClain says residents need to start the process with federal officials.
“You can file an extension, but it has to be with the IRS first,” McClain says. “We don’t have an extension form but we will allow the same extension as allowed by the IRS. You just need to give us a copy of it or your confirmation number.”
