Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein is joining more than a dozen municipalities backing Planned Parenthood’s lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The case centers on new federal guidelines that change the scoring for receiving Title X federal funds. Those dollars support reproductive health services provided by organizations like Planned Parenthood and city or county health departments.
The brief, filed by 17 cities and two counties, criticizes federal language that encourages grantees to emphasize abstinence.
The municipalities argue the agency did not properly follow the required notice and comment procedure for new rules, and allowing them to take effect could shift dollars away from longstanding providers, or force those providers to substantially change their offerings to receive funding.
