Columbus Police have identified the suspected robber who died May 21 after being "apprehended" by a group of bystanders.
Kelvin M. West, 23, was suspected of robbing a woman at the Speedway Gas Station on North Cassidy Avenue. A group of bystanders who witnessed the robbery chased him down, according to investigators.
"Once they were able to apprehend him, the victim of the homicide was extremely violent, he would not give up, and he assaulted, in fact, a couple of the persons who were simply trying to hold him and apprehend him as a result of the robbery, and hold him for the police," said Sgt. Dave Sicilian.
Columbus Police described the men who confronted West as "good Samaritans" in a news release.
Police and medics found West in "critical condition" in the parking lot of the nearby Four Points Hotel. He was taken to a hospital emergency room and died. Authorities have not specified the nature of his injuries.
The names of others involved in the altercation will not be released until they're reviewed by a prosecutor, Sicilian says. West has been identified as black, but the races of the bystanders have not been identified.
It is unclear if criminal charges will be filed.
This was the 41st homicide in Columbus in 2018, according to police.
