An Ohio State University Board of Trustees committee gave its approval Thursday for Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer to get a two-year contract extension.
Meyer would lead the Buckeyes on the sidelines at least through the 2022 football season.
As part of his contract extension, Meyer will receive a raise of about $1.2 million. His total salary for the 2018 season will be $7.6 million, making him the highest paid coach in the Big Ten Conference and moving him to the third-highest nationally.
Meyer has coached Ohio State's team for six seasons, and holds a record of 73-8. That includes a 47-3 Big Ten Conference record with two Big Ten championships, most recently in 2017. Under Meyer, Ohio State won the inaugural College Football Playoff national championship in 2014, their eighth national title in school history and first since 2002.
Ohio State is tied for the fewest losses in the nation since Meyer took over in 2012, and their record of 73 wins is the second-highest of that period.
Gene Smith, Ohio State's Athletic Director, described Meyer as "one of the finest coaches and mentors."
