Wexner Center for the Arts Director Sherri Geldin announced she will step down at the end of the year.
Geldin took the director position four years after “The Wex” opened in 1989.
The Wexner Center is The Ohio State University's "multidisciplinary, international laboratory for the exploration and advancement of contemporary art."
In the statement, Geldin said she is stepping down so the center can orchestrate what she calls a generational transition.
“Even today, I remain both proud and moved by the powerful and capacious potential of its founding mandate: that an art center situated at the threshold of a major research university could and should be a generative and inspiring habitat for cultural research, production, discovery, experience, and conversation—serving artists and audiences alike,” Geldin said.
According to marketing director Densil R. R. Porteous, the center emerged as one of the nation’s foremost contemporary art venues under Geldin’s leadership.
“I’ll be forever grateful for the wise counsel, generosity, and encouragement of my truly remarkable trustees (especially its founding benefactors); the partnership and expertise of a phenomenally talented staff; and the unwavering commitment of university leaders and close academic cohorts,” Geldin said.
Geldin did not specify what she will do after resigning. She served as the director for 25 years.
The Wexner Center Foundation board and the Office of the Provost will select a search firm and appoint a search committee to conduct a national search for the next director before Geldin steps down at the end of the year.
