Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown backed a two-year budget deal that could push federal deficit spending past a trillion dollars by next year. But Brown argues GOP lawmakers are responsible for a fair share of the red ink.
Last week, Republican lawmakers set aside their typical complaints about deficit spending to approve a two-year budget deal. Brown is taking them to task for the combination of that spending and the tax cut approved late last year.
“Sen. McConnell, Speaker Ryan should be ashamed of themselves," Brown says. "They talk about how bad budget deficits are and they’re responsible for blowing a huge hole in the federal budget and they continue to do that.”
The budget agreement alone, which Brown and 70 other Senators approved, accounts for about $400 billion in spending over the next two years. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget projects that could push the deficit beyond a trillion dollars by 2019.
