Franklin County Commissioners have approved a new paid family leave policy. About 1,400 workers in Franklin County can now get two weeks of their normal pay when taking time off under the family leave program.
That money will help fill a two-week span before short-term disability insurance kicks in for a fulltime employee who takes time off after having a baby or adopting a child. It also includes time off to care for a covered family member who has a serious medical condition.
“Even two weeks, that’s essentially one paycheck, can be the difference between missing a mortgage payment and not missing a mortgage payment," said Kevin Boyce, president of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners.
Boyce says commissioners will re-evaluate the program after two years to see how much it’s used and what it costs.
