Bryden Place Nursing Home, a for-profit facility on the city's East Side plagued by code violations and a poor reputation, has been shut down by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Bryden Place made headlines in December when first responders discovered a potentially fatal carbon monoxide leak. The facility was later cited for significant deficiencies and given six months by the health department to improve conditions.
In May, one resident overdosed on heroin after a social worker failed for months to put them in touch with rehabilitation services. There was a rodent infestation, and records show multiple accounts of inadequate patient care.
According to the government site Nursing Home Compare, Bryden Place received just one out of five stars - the lowest score possible.
Beverley Laubert, Ohio's Long-Term Care Ombudsman, says Bryden Place failed to make improvements within the allotted time.
“By and large there were more wide spread problems with the nursing home: environmental issues, general care issues, and so on,” Laubert says.
Bryden Place, which is run by the for-profit corporation Embassy Healthcare, racked up nearly $300,000 dollars in fines and was blocked from receiving reimbursements through Medicaid. Embassy Healthcare declined to comment.
Laubert says the remaining residents are being relocated.
