A Groveport company that manufactures steel rail components faces a $610,034 fine from federal safety officials over numerous alleged violations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said in a statement Wednesday that Groveport-based Amsted Rail Company workers to machine hazards and to small particles of silica, a powder than can be harmful when inhaled.

Among the alleged work hazards was a failure to adequately guard machinery, and failure to implement a respiratory-protection program.

“Companies must ensure their workers are trained in proper machine-safety procedures and provided the necessary personal protective equipment to prevent injuries and illness on the job,” OSHA’s Dorothy Dougherty said in a statement.

OSHA officials say two inspections revealed 19 major violations, and six repeat offenses.
