Vinton County has been without a grocery store for more than three years. Campbell's Market will soon change that.
After being the only county in Ohio without a grocery store, Vinton County broke ground on a new 12,000 square foot facility on Monday.
The Healthy Food for Ohio initiative is providing around $1.6 million dollars in state and local grants to help build the store, says Campbell's Market co-owner Michael Campbell.
Considered a rural food desert with 13,000 people, Vinton saw its last grocery store, SuperValu, close in 2013.
Campbell says the store will make a big difference in the access residents have to nutritious food like fresh produce and cuts of meat.
“Some of the comments they've made to us is they have to drive anywhere from 10 miles to 30 minutes round-trip to even find a healthy food option,” Campbell says.
The store is scheduled to open in August.
