Two school districts in Fayette County were closed today after a bomb threat that came the same day the two high schools were scheduled to play each other in basketball.
Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth says the threat against the Miami Trace and Washington Courthouse districts came in early this morning.
“The caller was not specific, although he mentioned numerous bombs. So we considered it a viable enough threat that all buildings were immediately secured," says Stanforth.
Stanforth says it appears to be a coincidence that the two high school basketball teams were scheduled to play Friday night. But he says canceling the game was an easy call.
“With the weather forecast, with the potential of ice coming in, would have probably compromised the game anyway," Stanforth said.
Stanforth says he expects both districts to be operating as usual next week.
