Elections Director, Former Employee Indicted For Theft

The Franklin County Elections director and a former subordinate have been indicted for theft in office. Ohio Auditor Dave Yost released a statement Friday saying William A. Anthony Jr. faces three third-degree felonies: one count of theft in office and two counts of tampering with records. 

A tip from a fraud hotline started a state investigation into the timesheet record-keeping of former elections fiscal officer Brenna Umbstaetter.  She’s accused of not showing up for work but still earning a paycheck.  Yost says the amounts totaled more than $7,000. 

Umbstaetter was indicted on two third-degree felonies: theft in office and tampering with records. In his statement Yost said, “Somebody who takes a paycheck without working is stealing – and the boss who lets her get away with it is no better.”
